Have you ever reached a point in your life where you started having nightmares about your editing job? Thinking to yourself that you would rather spend the rest of your life watching paint dry instead of editing one more boring video? We reached that point a couple of years ago and decided to do something about it. We were fed up with doing repetitive video editing tasks and as full-time editors, we started looking for options to automate our workflow in Premiere Pro.

After tinkering with AutoHot key for about a year or so we decided to see if there wasn’t a way to rewrite the automations we’ve been working on using ExtendScript – Adobe’s scripting language. So, in 2018 we started on the development of the Automator Plus Extension in Jacques’ garage in Cape Town, South Africa. We’ve spent years perfecting the art of automating the boring things in our video editing workflows and we’ve decided to release these superpowers to the world. We’ve identified some of the most tedious and boring workflows and created automations with thousands of variations to keep you focused on the creative side of video editing.

Now you don’t need to manually detect beats in a song. You can generate rough cuts in mere seconds and export screenshots even faster. We aspire to be at the forefront of everything automated. Adobe’s Premiere Pro is the first step of a long journey of automation software that we plan to walk. On our roadmap for 2022 we aim to expand the Automator Plus to work on the rest of the Adobe Suite, especially After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop and eventually we would like to port our software over to Final Cut Pro and Davinci Resolve.

We follow an agile approach to software development and release updates regularly. Although we’ve got checks and balances in place to ensure good code quality, bugs will inevitably creep in and we are determined to stomp them out whenever they occur. Our support team is ever ready to help you with any issues you might be experiencing.

We believe in collaborating with the Automator Plus community and value your feedback – if you have any concerns, suggestions, feature requests, or problems, please feel free to contact us. We try and stay up to date with the latest Adobe ExtendScript API features and we’ll be implementing new features on a constant basis moving forward.

Louwrens Labuschagne

Code Conjuror

Louwrens Labuschagne has a B.Eng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and an M.Sc degree in Data Science with over 10 years of coding experience and is currently employed as a data scientist at a large telecommunication company in South Africa.

From a young age, I’ve always been taking things apart to figure out how they work. From building a portable sound system to give me and my friends some pumping tunes when going on family holidays (in the early 2000 Bluetooth speakers wasn’t a thing), to teaching myself music by coding up a small C application at school.

Coding and engineering have always been part of my life, although I didn’t have the faintest idea of what studying engineer would entail – luckily I was pleasantly surprised. After my first degree at Stellenbosch, I went to work at the telecommunication corporation where I’m still currently employed full time.

Coming from a home where both parents were teachers I never knew what the corporate world entailed and boy was I surprised. All the politics and senseless slideshows motivating for budget quickly instilled a need in me to start my own thing and make the jump to self-employment.

At the core, I’m a busy body that likes to keep my mind stimulated. From yoga to learning a new language (programming or linguistic) from playing music, to teaching math and programming. I savour novel experiences and it especially exhilarates me when these disparate domains start overlapping.

TLDR; the synergy between man and machine tickles my fancy.

Jacques Greyling

Dream Alchemist

Jacques has a B.A (Hons) degree in Digital Film Production and is a full-time video editor with over 10 years of experience in the field. He owns three companies that specializes in photography, videography, and motion graphic design.

When I was asked to write a short biography describing who I am, I thought to myself: “Where should I begin?” Should I start in 2013 when I first opened the doors to the wedding videography company now known as 25 Weddings? The good old days where I used to work by myself – for myself? And I charged around R1500 for what is now known as our Professional Package?

Perhaps I could start by describing film school… Waking up every morning at 5am to walk to the train station located just around the corner or attending the most mundane classes on film noir and the French New Wave.

Or better yet, maybe it would be best if I start by telling you about my high school days at Somerset College. Bunking classes to secretly attend band practice in the music hall (in retrospect, how secretive can a drummer really be?) or choosing the most anti-art subjects available for the sake of ‘playing it safe’.

I guess the beginning doesn’t really matter as much as where I am right now. In a nutshell, I’m an easy going, nature loving guy who enjoys Krav Maga and going to the shooting range. I’m currently employed as a full-time media specialist and I have three self-operating businesses. Most importantly though, I am a husband to an amazing wife, who also specializes in photography and videography.

At the Automator Plus we strongly believe that coding should not be reserved for the elite and that it is in everybody’s capacity to start with a few small scripts and work their way up to automating bigger and bigger tasks. As such, we started a YouTube channel in 2019 where we teach you how to use Adobe’s ExtendScript, VS Code and basic programming building blocks. We believe in sharing knowledge, code snippets and best practices that we discover on our journey as we feel that the current ExtendScript landscape is very barren.
